Germany’s Oromo Nationals and Other Nationals Protest Killings of Immigrants in Saudi Arabia

A protest demonstration, organized by the Union of Oromo Students in Germany (UOSG) in collaboration with the Oromo Community in Hessen and the Oromo Community in Munich, strongly condemned the mass killings, torturing and brutal treatments and rapes by some Saudi citizens and security forces. The protest took place on 21 November 2013 in front of the Saudi Arabia consulate in Frankfurt am Main, Germany; the rally was attended by more than 60 people. Members of the Union of Oromo Students and other Oromo nationals from all parts of Germany chanted such slogans as: “Stop Killing Innocent Immigrants!”, “Free Our Brothers and Sisters!”, “Stop killing Our Sisters and Brothers!”, “Stop the Rape!”, “Enough is Enough!”
The call for the demonstration, including our demand letter, has already been sent to different organizations and diplomatic missions operating in Germany, including the City Administration of Frankfurt, Amnesty International, EU and the Human Right Watch.
The main aims of the demonstration were: 
1. To demand the government of Saudi Arabia to stop inhuman act against Oromo and other national immigrants immediately;
2. To call for the police and security officers, who committed crimes against innocent civilians by using excessive force, be brought to justice;
3. To demand the government of Saudi Arabia to adhere to international conventions on the protection of the rights of all immigrants and members of their families;
4. To inform the population in Germany about the situation of the Oromo and other nationals in Saudi Arabia.
At the end of the event, Mr. Abdella Mohammed, as a representative of the organizers, made a closing speech highly acknowledging the active participation of the attendants. The participants responded pledging to continue our protests and struggle till the freedom of our people is achieved.

Men and women are forced from their homes by mobs of civilians and dragged through the streets of Riyadh and Jeddah. Distressing videos of Ethiopian men being mercilessly beaten, kicked and punched have circulated the Internet and triggered worldwide protests by members of the Ethiopian diaspora as well as outraged civilians in Ethiopia. Women report being raped, many repeatedly, by vigilantes and Saudi police. Ethiopian Satellite Television (ESAT), has received reports of fifty deaths and states that thousands living with or without visas have been detained awaiting repatriation. Imprisoned, many relay experiences of torture and violent beatings.
Earlier this year the Saudi authorities announced plans to purge the kingdom of illegal migrants. In July, King Abdullah extended the deadline for them to “regularize their residency and employment status [from 3 rd July] to November 4th. Obtain the correct visa documentation, or risk arrest, imprisonment and/or repatriation. On 6th November, Inter Press Service (IPS) reports, Saudi police, “rounded up more than 4,000 illegal foreign workers at the start of a nationwide crackdown,“ undertaken in an attempt (the authorities say), to reduce the 12% unemployment rate “creating more jobs for locals”.
Leading up to the “crackdown” many visa-less migrants left the country: nearly a million Bangladeshis, Indians, Filipinos, Nepalis, Pakistanis and Yemenis are estimated to have left the country in the past three months. More than 30,000 Yemenis have reportedly crossed to their home country in the past two weeks,” and around 23,000 Ethiopian men and women have “surrendered to Saudi authorities” [BBC].
The police and civilian vigilante gangs are victimizing Ethiopian migrants, residing with and without visas; the “crackdown” has provided the police and certain sectors of the civilian population with an excuse to attack Ethiopians. Press TV reports that “Saudi police killed three Ethiopian migrant workers in the impoverished neighborhood of Manfuhah in the capital, Riyadh, where thousands of African workers, mostly Ethiopians, were waiting for buses to take them to deportation centers.” Hundreds have been arrested and report being tortured: “we are kept in a concentration camp, we do not get enough food and drink, when we defend our sisters from being raped, they beat and kill us,” a migrant named Kedir, told ESAT TV. Women seeking refuge within the Ethiopian consulate tell of being abducted from the building by Saudi men and raped. ESAT, reports that several thousand migrants have been transported by trucks to unknown destinations outside the cities.
Whilst the repatriation of illegal migrants is lawful, the Saudi authorities do not have the right to act violently; beating, torturing and raping vulnerable, frightened people: people, who wish simply to work in order to support their families. The abuse that has overflowed from the homes where domestic workers are employed onto the streets of the capital reflects the wide-ranging abuse suffered by migrant workers of all nationalities in Saudi Arabia and throughout the Gulf States.
Trail of Abuse
This explosion of state sponsored violence against Ethiopians highlights the plight of thousands of migrant workers in Saudi Arabia. They tell of physical, sexual and psychological abuse at the hands of employers, agents and family members. The draconian Kafala sponsorship system, (which grants ownership of migrants to their sponsor), together with poor or non-existent labour laws, endemic racism and gender prejudice, creates an environment in which extreme mistreatment has become commonplace in the oil-rich kingdom.
There are over nine million migrant workers in Saudi Arabia, that’s 30% of the population. They come from poor backgrounds in Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Indonesia and Ethiopia and make up “more than half the work force. The country would grind to an embarrassing stand still without their daily toil. “Many suffer multiple abuses and labor exploitation [including withholding of wages, excessive working hours and confinement], sometimes amounting to slavery-like conditions”, Human Rights Watch (HRW) states.
The level of abuse of domestic workers is hard to judge: their isolation combined with total control exerted by employers, together with government indifference, means the vast majority of cases go unreported. Until August this year there was no law covering domestic abuse. Legislation has been passed: however, the authorities, HRW reports “are yet to make clear which agencies will police the new law…without effective mechanisms to punish domestic abuse, this law is merely ink on paper.” All pressure needs to be exerted on the rulers of Saudi Arabia to ensure the law is implemented and enforced so victims of domestic violence feel it is safe to come forward.
Ethiopian Governments Negligence
Whilst thousands of its nationals are detained, beaten, killed and raped, the Ethiopian government hangs its negligent head in silence in Addis Ababa, does not act to protect or swiftly repatriate their nationals, and criminalises those protesting in Addis Ababa against the Saudi actions.
Although freedom to protest is enshrined within the Ethiopian constitution (a liberal minded, largely ignored document written by the incumbent party), dissent and public demonstrations, if not publicly outlawed, are actively discouraged by the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) regime. In response to the brutal treatment meted out by the Saudi police and gangs of vigilantes in Riyadh and Jeddah, outraged civilians in Addis Ababa staged a protest outside the Saudi Embassy, only to be confronted by their own police force, wielding batons and beating demonstrators. Al Jazeera reports that police “arrested dozens of people outside the Saudi embassy [in Addis Ababa] in a crackdown on demonstrators protesting against targeted attacks on Ethiopians in Saudi Arabia.” A senior member of The Blue Party, Getaneh Balcha was one of over 100 people arrested for peacefully protesting.
The government’s justification, rolled out to defend yet another suppressive response to a democratic display, was to assert that the protest “was an illegal demonstration, they had not got a permit from the appropriate office”: petty bureaucratic nonsense, hiding the undemocratic truth that the government does not want public protests of any kind on the streets of its cities: effectively, freedom of assembly is banned in Ethiopia. The protestors, he said, “were fomenting anti-Arab sentiments here among Ethiopians.” Given the brutal treatment of Ethiopians in Saudi Arabia, anger and anti-Saudi sentiment (not anti Arab) is, one would imagine understandable, and should be shared by the Ethiopian government.
The people of Ethiopia are living under a duplicitous highly repressive regime. The EPRDF consistently demonstrates it’s total indifference to the needs and human rights of the people. Freedom of expression, political dissent and public assembly is denied by a regime that is committing a plethora f human rights violations in various parts of the country, atrocities constituting in certain regions crimes against humanity. In fact, according to Genocide Watch, the Ethiopian government is committing genocide in the Somali region, as well as on the “Anuak, Oromo and Omo” ethnic groups (or tribes).Freedom of expression, political dissent and public assembly is denied by a regime that is committing a plethora f human rights violations in various parts of the country, atrocities constituting in certain regions crimes against humanity.
The recent appalling events in Saudi Arabia have brought thousands of impassioned Ethiopians living inside the country and overseas onto the streets. This powerful worldwide action presents a tremendous opportunity for the people to unite, to demand their rights through peaceful demonstrations and to call with one voice for change within their beloved country. The time to act is now, as a wise man has rightly said, “nothing happens by itself, man must act and implement his will”.

OSA and Oromo Community Associations in NA: Open Letter to Prince Mohammed bin Naif bin Abdulaziz, Re: Oromo Immigrants in Saudi Arabia

The following open letter was written by the Oromo Studies Association (OSA) and nearly half a dozen Oromo Community Associations in North America (NA) to Prince Mohammed bin Naif bin Abdulaziz of Saudi Arabia regarding the current state of Oromo immigrants in Saudi Arabia.

Your Excellency,
We, the Oromo community associations in North America and the Oromo Studies Association, write this letter in relation to the situation in the kingdom of immigrant workers, refugees, and asylum seekers from Ethiopia, specifically concerning the Oromo people from Ethiopia. We heard and observed with disbelief and a profound sense of grief the awful news coming from Saudi Arabia. The graphic images and videos of indiscriminate beatings of defenseless immigrant workers, ostensibly at the hands of Saudi Arabian law enforcement officials and vigilantes, has clearly shocked and enraged us. Law enforcement officials have randomly rounded up, kept tens of thousands of the immigrants in concentration camp-type facilities, and deported many thousands more to Ethiopia without regard to individual cases and needs.
We cannot establish with certainty which party is responsible for the inhumane treatment of Ethiopian immigrants in your country. Notwithstanding the evidence of the images, we find it difficult to accept that the government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia condones or sanctions the dehumanizing treatment of human beings, whether they are legal or illegal. Regardless, the indiscriminate and wanton acts of cruelty perpetrated against our compatriots in Saudi Arabia have violated all boundaries of human decency and respect for human dignity.
The Oromo communities in North America are alarmed by the saga of refugees resulting from the rush and cruel measures taken by the law enforcement officials of your country. As human beings, we cannot avoid having a sense of fellow feeling when other human beings are subjected to indescribable suffering. In our view, the heavy-handed approach fails to take into account that all members of the human family are entitled to some inalienable and fundamental rights, including those your government has categorized wholesale as “illegal” and “unwanted.” Worse yet, the approach does not solve the fundamental socio-economic problems Saudi Arabia is trying to resolve in spite the high human toll it causes. We believe that your government does not endorse acts of indiscriminate violence being meted out on any human being. Even those who are found guilty of violating the laws of your country deserve a measure of respect and lawful treatment.
Your Excellency,
While we have sympathy for all Ethiopians who have been subjected to untold suffering, we like to call your attention to the unique case of Oromo immigrants in your country who are lumped together with all Ethiopians and subjected to arbitrary measures. The Oromo people, the single largest nation in the Horn of Africa, constitute about 40 percent of the population of Ethiopia. They are also found in Kenya and Somalia in significant numbers. In Ethiopia, despite their numeric superiority, the Oromo have always been treated as a minority group, perpetually subjected to political, economic, and cultural depredations and dispossession. It is no wonder a large chunk of the refugees from Ethiopia in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia come from the Oromo nation. Although we know that the majority of the refugees in the Kingdom are migrant domestic workers looking for better opportunities, we like to bring to your attention that the vast majority of the Oromo in your country are refugees and asylum seekers who fled political and religious persecutions in Ethiopia.

My Essay is upon Oromoland

Mr Chairman and Members,
Oromo Children of LovedaleIn Oromoland many things are different from South African things. The people are different, and the country itself is different from this country. First of all, I want to speak about the climate of the country. Perhaps many of you won’t believe about the climate, because none of you have been there, except those that came from there. But you read in the books of Geography, and those books say the climate is very hot. I can tell you the climate is not all very hot. But it is quite true that the southern part of the country is exceedingly hot, because there are no mountains there. The upper country is much cooler than Cape Colony, although it is near the Equator, because there are many high mountains near Abyssinia. There are no lakes in Oromoland. But there are many small rivers. The largest river is the River Abaye, that is, I think, the Blue Nile. Also the Hawash River runs through the north of Oromoland and falls into the Blue Nile, at the West of Abyssinia. There are many other rivers, whose names I forget.
Now I shall tell you about the marriage customs. I heard George Tyamzashe’s paper about Kaffir marriages.2 He said when the Kaffirs are going to get married, they buy their wives.  Ithink you remember when Jacob wanted to marry, he worked for fourteen years, and then he got those two wives. Well, that is not the way of marrying people in our country. When a man want to marry a girl, first he goes and speaks with her parents, and then if her parents agree with him, he will take her, but if not he will leave her. The Oromo people are quite different from the people of South Africa. They are different in dressing. The Oromo people never wear red blankets, as the Kaffirs do. Rich people wear short trousers and a fine mantle of cloth, and poor people wear the same clothes as the Arabs. The women wear a fine skin dress and no one of you could tell the difference between that skin and cloth. The houses are not the same as those here. The Oromo huts are four or five times bigger than these Kaffir huts. I may say the Oromo house has got two storeys. In the upper storey they keep corn and other things; but in the lower one the people sleep. There are two rooms in the lower storey, one is where the mother of the house does her work and the other one is for sleeping and eating.
There are many kinds of grain, as wheat, barley, maize, and bishinga, that is Kaffir-corn, also pumpkins, potatoes, and other things like potatoes, beans, coffee, peas, bananas, also cabbages and tobacco and many other things which I can’t name in English. There is plenty of honey. The people don’t keep bees as in this country. They hang a kind of basket made of reeds high on a tree. When the honey is ready, the people climb the tree, and get the honey. They sell it in the markets, of these there are many. Oromos never eat wild animals. They don’t eat pigs in northern Oromoland; and they don’t eat any kind of birds; and few people eat fowls or eggs. But there are some tribes that live among the Oromos, that eat nearly everything. The Oromo people are rich in cattle and corn. Some of them have farms for cattle, and some for corn.
The Oromos are not lazy people. The men never allow their wives to go and build the housefor them, and they won’t allow them to go and labour in the fields all day for food, while theysit down in their huts and smoke their long pipes. The women there do not work like that but they only work in the house while their husbands till the ground. The Oromos are not lazy people in working. Don’t think because you saw these boys, that all the Oromos are like them. If you go there, then you will know what work is. The Oromos do not waste their money on tobacco and in buying pipes about one foot long. They won’t do that. What they do is this. They get up early in the morning, and they take their breakfast without washing their face, and then they take their bullocks and their yokes, and go to plough the ground. They never return again till the sunset.
The bullocks in Oromoland are very big, much bigger than those in South Africa, as high as a horse. The yokes are nearly like those used in this country. It is a custom to train one of the oxen to guard the Kraal [dalla?] and they sharpen its horns to fight. It does no work but just keeps the kraal. The kraals in Oromoland are bigger than those here, but are made of bushes too. Many people’s cattle go into one kraal. Nearly every cow or ox has a name, and they like  very much to eat salt. There are blacksmiths who make the ploughs, long narrow ploughs, and only two oxen draw them.
There are many forests in Oromoland. In these forests there are many dangerous things, worst of all are robbers that hunt for small boys and girls, and also for big people to kill them, and when they kill anyone, there is a great feast, because he has killed a man or a beast. There are lots of wild animals in Oromoland, such as elephants, lions, leopards, wild bucks or antelopes and many others too. There are many snakes, a very big hairy one, the boa constrictor, the python, the egg-eater, the horned snake, water snakes, and others. Especially the pythons are troublesome.
The Oromo horses are just the same as the Arab horses; they all look like race horses. The Oromos are heathens in religion. They worship a big tree, and in the mountains. They obey just as the king tells them, and the rule is if a person breaks the king’s commandment, he is taken to the market and punished, by being beaten, or sold as a slave. Each part of the country has got a king or a chief of its own. For instance, let us take the Jimma country. That country has got a king or a cheif [sic] of its own. These Kings always want to fight each other, and everyone wants to be the greatest of all the kings. If he conquers one of these kings, first of all he asks for a tax; and if that king won’t pay it, he just comes and destroys him. Sometime that king wants about 200 oxen or he wants some horses, and the other king has to give, because if he won’t he knows that his life will be taken from him, and what he has too.

Disappearances of Oromo Nationals by The Ethiopian Government: November 2012 to November 2013

QEERROOThe current Ethiopian government has continued widespread mass arrests, unlawful killings, and disappearances of innocent civilians its citizens over the last 21 or so years. Among the communities highly affected by such repression and oppression of the regime, the Oromo people is probably rated as number 1. Oromos have been unable to live in their country in peace since they fell under the rule of the current minority Ethiopian regime. This report partially captures the list of Oromos who have been unlawfully arrested, killed, or disappeared over a period of one year from November 2012 to November 2013, compiled by the National Youth Movement for Freedom and Democracy (NYMFD) aka Qeerroo. The report is by no means a comprehensive account of the actual number of people arrested, killed, and disappeared. It is rather a tiny fraction of what actually happened in Oromia and in the country at large. As it is very difficult to move in the country and compile reports because the government denies access to information, this report is only the widely known cases that were taken from Qeerroo website as it was reported over a period of one year.
As is known the National Youth Movement for Freedom and Democracy (NYMFD) aka Qeerroo was formed in 2011 by Oromo Youth to ignite the so called “Revolt Against Subjugation” (aka Fincila Diddaa Gabrummaa) in Oromia with the objective of averting the repression of Oromo nationals by the Ethiopian authorities through civil disobedience.
